Welcome to December!
This past month, I started drafting our incorporation documents and continued talking with payment processors: we've still got to find someone that will let us take credit cards for our crowd-directed grantmaking site. Some folks didn't want to talk until we've incorporated, which gives us a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem: we hadn't wanted to spend the time and money on incorporation and lawyer fees until we were reasonably sure we could find a payment processor, but those underwriters want to see our articles of incorporation and a few months' of bank statements before they can say whether they would work with us.
Other folks were willing to talk but informed us our grantmaking model is a prohibited business type, and we might need to start a company in the EU. (Curiouser and curiouser!) I'll be spending the next couple of weeks doing research, consulting with our Board of Directors, and trying to figure out our best option going forward.
Today is #GivingTuesday, a day to celebrate generosity and encourage philanthropy. It's a bit of a tough day for me because I had really hoped and expected that the Effing Foundation would be ready to accept financial donations by now -- but I gratefully accept the gift of your continued support and encouragement. If you have the resources, consider donating to an organization doing work around gender & sexuality issues run by people of color, such as the Women of Color Sexual Health Network and Black Girl Dangerous.
I hope that the holiday season goes well for all of you! I know it can be a really tough time of year, so if you need a little support, consider visiting Captain Awkward's "Ugh...Holidays" open thread. With vacations and holiday happenings I expect progress to be slow, so I'm planning to take a break from this newsletter in January. I'll be back with more updates in February!
Peace,
~Kit Stubbs, Ph.D.
