A fabulous February to you, Foundation followers!
I hope your 2016 is off to a good start. My research into payment processing led me to questions about nonprofit tax law that Google and my own reading of Internal Revenue Service documents couldn't answer, so I ran our strategic plan by a nonprofit tax lawyer.
The good news is that we can basically do what we want: find cool sex-positive projects to fund and then use crowdfunding techniques to raise money for them. Yay!
The less good news is that we need to overhaul our mission statement, strategic plan, and Terms of Service to be more IRS-friendly. We'll need to focus more on education and the arts -- and, fortunately, those are still pretty broad categories. My immediate plans are to work on this overhaul, run it by our Board of Directors, run it by the tax lawyer, and then I think we can finally move to incorporation.
Other updates and tidbits:
- If you missed it, go check out Ronnie Ritchie's great comic, "Yes, You Can Be Sex-Positive and Still Prefer Vanilla Sex". (I'll also add that you can be sex-positive and asexual, too!)
- Suzannah Weiss's piece, "3 Ways To Be Sexually Empowered Without Being Sexually Entitled" is also worth a look, especially if you're interested in orgasm equity.
- For folks in New England, I'll be running a meetup for kinky makers and crafters at the NELA Fetish Fair Fleamarket on February 12 at 9:45pm.
Thanks for taking the time to keep up with the Effing Foundation!
Peace,
