Happy Pride Month! 

June is Pride Month and at Effing we’re celebrating love, community, and radical, inclusive queerness! Pride Month is important to us because it uniquely embodies the sex-positive communities we serve.

Pride Is A Riot

The first Pride, which took place in 1970, grew out of the Stonewall Uprising, which took place in 1969. The uprising, a direct response to police brutality, was led by two queer trans women, Silvia Riviera and Marsha P. Johnson. The resistance that occurred at Stonewall became the catalyst for the modern LGBTQIA+ liberation movement. 

In recent years, there has been a push to honor the original spirit of Pride, which was centered in the struggle for human rights in contrast to the widespread commercialization of Pride by big corporations. Pride is about resisting the oppression of marginalized people. Pride is about acceptance and freedom. Pride is the brick thrown by Marsha P. Johnson in the face of police violence. Pride is the full spectrum of the Queer community and will always be a riot, centered in revolution.
